Alleyways of Monpazier
The façades of the houses lead into the streets – called carreyras – and back into alleyways – called carreyrous. In the Middle Ages, the carreyrous were used by the peasants. The main streets were reserved for the nobility. Some carreyrous were bridged to gain extra space – here note the small stone chamber suspended over the alley which bears witness to medieval town planning.
